I should be studying. I have a final in less than 10 hours but writing this seems more important to me. Instead of hitting the books, I find myself on the couch with Annie listening to this record. I keep getting up and flipping it from Side A to Side B and back to Side A again. The record in question is Gold by Honolulu garage punx Gnarwhal.
We are sitting here listening and talking about all the amazing times we had because of this band. We met people at their shows, learned the words to their songs and made tons of friends because of this band. My band shares a practice space with them and we’ve played a ton of shows with them. The first time I saw them I helped them load in by carrying Adam’s bass drum into Mercury and since then have become friends with all three of them. I would go as far as to say they are the reason I am as involved with the music scene here as I am.
They are breaking up. Last Thursday when I saw Erica she said she was really bummed about it. I said I was too. She told me that seeing me singing along to their songs at recent shows made her feel amazing. I told her that she made me feel amazing for saying that and I didn’t know what else to say so I showed her my goosebumps.
Goosebumps. That is the kind of effect this band has had on me. Without a question, having them be a band has drastically impacted me and improved my life. I know it means the world to them to have me as a fan but I want them to know it means the world to me to have been a part of this thing that their band helped to create. Thank you Adam, Nick and Erica for all of it.
(G)Narwhal was the first Hawaii band in a long time to get me excited and I kinda see them as one of the catalysts of the great things we have going on today. I first saw them on Halloween weekend 2010 and along with some other shows, I kinda mark that weekend as the beginning of me going back to shows and becoming more involved in the music scene. It sucks they’re breaking up. Their last show is gonna be fucking buck wild for sure.
