Interview my friend Doug/DR did for his cable access talk show Shaka Talk with his aunt Elsa Flores Almaraz, a Chicano artist and wife to the late Carlos Almaraz of Los Four. She talks about her art, grassroots political work as well as the art and work Carlos did for the Chicano art movement, as well as his struggle with AIDS, which took his life in 1989. She is based in LA and in Kauai, where Carlos is buried.

Also at the end of this is a clip from Elsa’s work in progress film on Carlos, with Zach De La Rocha (son of Beto De La Rocha of Los Four) reading Carlos’ manifesto “An Aesthetic Alternative.”

Also appropriate with the publication of this article in the LA Times about an upcoming retrospective of Carlos Almaraz’s art.

Makua Valley Blast Test are my favorite Hawaii band ever. A two man + drum machine hardcore unit from Hawaii, specializing in freak powered progressive powerviolence (prog-violence). Mikko on bass, Todd on vocals. They began in concept in 2006 and played their first show in 2007 in the basement of the Queen Theater in Kaimuki. They attempted to play as many all ages shows during those years, but pickings were lean, especially for such a confrontational and weird sounding group. They recorded a 3” cd demo in 2010 and were featured on the Freak Power compilation from Fuck Yoga records.  They opened for Iron Lung in 2010 when they came down to Hawaii, which was when I was added on free jazz alto sax skronking, and later added synthesizer noise as well

This is the link to the demo and some other unreleased songs:

NERVE BEATS LIVE ON KTUH 90.3 TONIGHT

INTERVIEW @ 9:45 pmPERFORMANCE @ 10 pm
STREAMING ONLINE @ KTUH.ORG

I don’t talk much about my band on here but we’re playing live on the radio tonight. Tune in/steam it online. We’re are a minimalist post punk band ala Wire/The Minutemen/The Cravats who explore free jazz/improvisational territories. If that’s your bag, dig it.

I’m sure Mr. Wadge would enjoy the fact that I was becoming overwhelmed by his music as I walked through the throngs of tourists in Waikiki tonight. Exotica/Tiki themed one man grindcore from Canada. "What?"Right. Check out the newest LP Total Volcano Exploding here.

TONIGHT! FREE!! ALL AGES!! DON’T FORGET TO DANCE!!

Played a house show

That doesn’t happen in Hawaii ever, so when it does we go hard. Nerve Beats, Anthe, Siblings and Blood Cave all pulled real great sets. Real fucking fun. Sorry I broke a shoe rack or moshed anybody into anyone. Also fancy cameras need to know their place in the pit and the performance space.
